Help Preserve Newport History
Thanks to generous community support, The Zabriskie Memorial Church of Saint John the Evangelist is undergoing long-awaited and long-needed restoration and repairs as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary Year!
Founded in 1875 by abolitionist and missionary Peter Quire, St. John’s first congregants originally met in the humble cobbler’s Third Street home. By the end of that year, the congregation had built its first church, now used as our Guild Hall.
The current Gothic Revival-style Church now proudly standing at the corner of Washington & Willow streets was built thanks to a $100,000 donation by Sarah Titus Zabriskie in memory of her mother, Sarah Jane Zabriskie. Consecrated in 1894, St. John’s is the cornerstone of the Point Neighborhood and beyond.
Our current construction, Phase 1A, funded by a $916,000 grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and individual donors, is a $1.2 million-dollar roof restoration that got under way in May 2019 and is expected to be complete in September 2019. Phase 1A is the blue area in the graphics above.
For Phase 1B, Exterior Stone Repointing, in yellow above, we are still looking to raise at least $300,000 in funding before the end of 2019 from individuals both within the parish and in the wider community in order to keep our five-year plan on track.
